Royal Phoenix 3 Plus Tent

Bought this as a pup tent to give our young teenage girls a bit of independence (although only ever 6 feet away). Very good value, plenty of room for two people or three kids for short ventures. Easy to erect, though inner first. Only problem I had was never getting the flysheet to match the poles properly, and the fly needed tying to poles using tags that you actually have to tie in a knot. Good little tent."

I bought this tent when it first came out about 8 years ago and it has only just been retired due to the waterproofing starting to come off. It's an ideal starter tent, very easy to erect and an attractive price for a brand name tent. The quality is good, the only downside for me is that it pitches inner first (not sure if the newer ones still do)."

The most attractive feature of this tent is the price; RRP is £40 but with almost no effort you'll find one for around £25. This tent is hard to define; it's too small to be a family tent (unless you are a small and intimate family), but it's a little too large to be a backpacking type tent. I've used it for 1-2 night breaks with one occupant, and it's suited that role perfectly. The tent arrives in a single bag containing the inner, flysheet, poles and pegs. The bag is somewhere around 1m long and has carry handles. I was pleased to find that on my first outing I could easily get the thing back in the packet! Pitching the tent is quite quick and simple, the inner goes up first which can be a pain in inclement weather but the pitching time is short enough that you'll not get much water ingress. This tent has the 'ring and pin' system which makes getting the (3) poles in place quick and simple. 6 guy lines keep the tent lashed to the floor and you'll have a choice of a front or side door! The porch area is big enough to sit in, it's got two windows in the front and one on the 'roof'. Both doors can be rolled up when it's fine and the zips are covered by storm flaps for when it's not. In the sleeping area there is enough room for a double airbed and probably just enough room for a single alongside it (although I've not tried). There is a handy pocket for keys etc and a loop at the top for hanging a light. The door of the sleeping area can be closed, open, or mesh to keep the bugs out. What more can I say? I've used it in all conditions from 35C to a pretty severe storm and it's been fine, it's never leaked and and nothing has broken. I don't normally give things top marks, but I don't think this tent could do anything better. £30 provides a season full of adequate accommodation for 1-2 people, it's a proper tent from a proper manufacturer and it should last for years."
